The length of the tour: 8.4 km
Duration of the tour: 2.5 hours
Difference in level: 260 m up, the same down

Nature of the tour:
A short, easy walking tour on well-marked tourist roads and paths. The detour to Csörgő-szürdok is a bit difficult to walk, an adventurous but short section. The Ágasvár tourist house is on a moderately wide road. This simple excursion also takes place in an unadulterated forest environment, let’s tackle the Mátra in at least a pair of hiking boots with non-slip soles. It is also worth bringing a trekking pole to overcome the steeper sections, and a small backpack will fit our essentials well.

Starting point: Mátrakeresztes, parking lot in front of Fakanalas inn. Bus stop, accessible from Pásztó on the Galyatétöi road.

Description of the tour
We start from the parking lot in front of the Fakanalas Fogadó in Mátrakerestes, cross the national road and choose the one on the left of the two asphalt roads leading to the resort, following the P signs to the end of the houses. We leave the tiny Békás lake, which is not visible from the road, and we enter the trees of the forest. Our marked path is not directly on the bank of the stream, but a little above it, parallel to it, into the depths of the mountain range. The ZO sign towards Óvár branches off from the left, we continue walking along the P sign parallel to the stream bed.

On the left side of our road, huge rock walls, the andesite towers of Bagoly-kő rise up from the trees, we pass by a popular rock-climbing spot. Our wide, comfortable path runs right next to the stony bed of the cozy Csörgő stream, at a fork the road marked P+ turns left, we continue on the road marked P at the bottom of the valley through the ever-narrowing valley. After a few minutes, the sign Z will come to us from the right across a ford.

A few meters from the junction of P and Z, make sure to take a detour into the wild Csörgő gorge, the path marked PO branches off to the right and gives up after a few steps. The stream is squeezed between several meter-high, vertical rock walls, and roars between huge rocks in its bed. We jump over the stones, then next to the roots of the beech trees, often clinging to them, we climb out of the short canyon, then following the PO signs, our path returns to the tourist path marked P and Z, right at the nicely occupied Vándor spring.

After we have sufficiently quenched our thirst with the cooling water of the spring, we fight our way up to the junction of a level road with a medium speed, here we turn left, the Z□ sign goes to the right through the wonderful forest reserve to Mátraszentimre. Shortly after, the steeply sloping road marked PΩ branches off to the left to the non-visitable cave of Csörgő-lyuk. After a few minutes, you will come across the P+ sign coming from the left at another junction, turn right and cross the Ágasvár forestry road, then another small climb and you will reach the western edge of the large meadow in front of the Ágasvár tourist house.

The Ágasvár tourist house, which looks back on a long history, has been at the service of hikers since 1925 by rebuilding and expanding a former hunting lodge. The tourist house and hostel buildings stand in a fairy-tale clearing under the characteristic cone of Ágasvár, in front of which you can relax in a beautiful, fresh green clearing during the restaurant’s opening hours.

At the closed western side of the tourist house plot, we turn left onto the road marked Z, and we reach the saddle called Két Vár köze (Ágasvár, Óvár) through beautiful beech trees and a footpath interspersed with rounded rocks. From here, the ZO sign starts to the left towards the upper part of the Óvár. The landscape opens up to the right, and we can enjoy a beautiful view of the northwestern region of Mátra. The Z-marked tourist road continues through pleasant beech trees until you reach the Kosik-tanya building, where you switch to the P□ sign that starts to the left.

We continue on the cart road, then switch to a path that leads through a black pine forest to the slightly overgrown clearing of Hosszú-rét. We cut through a pine forest again, then we pass by the Lench spring, a small lake and soon we reach the upper houses of the Békás lake resort. However, our marked path does not go into the settlement, but goes to the right on a slightly steeply sloping path, on which we descend in a few minutes to our starting point, in front of the Fakanalas Fogadó in Mátrakereztes.
